CHAPTER 11

V icky stepped down from the carriage that had brought her, Mariah, and Peter to the door of Gatwick House so fast that she would have landed flat on her face if Bert hadn’t caught her.

“Careful, Vicky,” Mariah cautioned her as Peter helped her step down. “There’s no sense in being in such a rush.”

“Thank you, Bert,” Vicky whispered to the hapless driver as she righted herself. The two shared a look and she glanced over her shoulder as if to say “Sisters can be such a nuisance”.

As far as she was concerned, there was every reason for her to hurry. Her dear, charming St. George would be at the supper. She buzzed with energy, knowing that the man who had awakened her from her fog of sleep and made her curious about life again was inside of the beautiful townhouse in front of her. If nothing else, she needed to find him and thank him for the blessing of renewal he’d given her.

“I’m sure Sir Christopher will be waiting for you with baited breath,” Mariah said as Peter escorted her past where Vicky waited and up the steps to the Gatwick’s front door, which was held open by a stately butler. “Rushing won’t make a difference.”

The slithering feeling of guilt that Vicky had battled so much with in the last few days struck her once more. Or perhaps it was more than guilt. It was the feeling that something wasn’t right, that she wasn’t right. She picked up her skirts and followed Mariah and Peter into Gatwick House, keeping her masked face tilted down on the off chance that someone would notice her discomfort.

The guests were gathering in a massive parlor across the hall from an even larger dining room, where Vicky caught a glimpse of masked servants making final preparations for their feast. As soon as she stepped into the parlor, Vicky held her breath, clasping a hand over the silver locket that she still wore. She scanned the men and women that stood in groups, laughing, chatting, and admiring each other’s masks and dress.

“This is such a delightfully unusual way to enjoy a meal,” a young woman several yards to her side commented to Bianca and Natalia Marlowe and Cecelia Campbell.

“Yes, Lady Tavistock,” Natalia answered, her eyes filled with awe behind her mask.

“I’m sorry your husband could not be here,” Cecelia said in a voice touched by her own sadness.

Lady Tavistock smiled gratefully at her. “He’s been so ill lately,” she said, then pressed her mouth shut and shook her head.

Curiosity almost made Vicky join the group. The ladies were her age, after all, and she knew the Marlowe sisters and Cecelia. But a light touch on her back caused her to half jump out of her skin and whirl around, ready to fight if she had to.

She was relieved beyond measure to find her wonderful St. George standing behind her, wearing a mask of silver, like the face of the moon. He was smiling, but that smile quickly dropped.
